Judy Brewer

Standing Out - Becoming a price maker not a price taker

As food security becomes one of the biggest global policy issues, farmers in Australia are uniquely placed to grow in importance and increase market power. But what does that mean at the farmgate in North East Victoria? It means that new and expanded opportunities are opening up at a rapid rate, and that rewards will come to those who have the right product at the right time, as well as a clear marketing strategy and the capacity to deliver. Our natural inclination as farmers is to sit back and accept wholesale prices for everything that goes off the farm while paying retail prices for everything that comes in. To accept the status quo and existing marketing systems is something that has long been part of our farming culture and works to remove impetus for individual enterprises to specialise and to stand out from the crowd. This workshop aims to look at what each rural business can do to maximise their own market power in a changing world rural environment. We will look at the environment we now operate in and by sharing our experiences, better position ourselves for burgeoning new market opportunities.

Judy is an economist, community worker and fourth generation farmer. She owns and manages Grossotto Poll Hereford at Mudgegonga, combining a commercial beef weaner operation with a small stud, producing female lines for breeders using top genetics and performance recording.
